Fairfield County Garage Door books garage door repair across Greenwich — Old Greenwich, Riverside, Cos Cob, Byram, Glenville, Chickahominy, central Greenwich and the backcountry north of the Merritt. We are the desk: we answer, take the details, judge how urgent it is, and hand the job to one vetted local garage door company. How that works, without the marketing.
What Greenwich doors actually break
Greenwich has the widest spread of garage types of any town on our list, and the repair is a different repair at each end of it.
The backcountry — heavy custom doors. North of the Merritt the garages are three, four and five bays, often in carriage houses, and the doors are frequently solid or clad wood rather than builder steel. A wood door can weigh double what a steel one of the same size weighs, which makes spring sizing the whole job rather than a detail: a spring set that is adequate for a steel door will fail early under a wood one and will leave the door out of balance in the meantime. The other backcountry fact is parts — custom and architectural doors mean sections and panels are ordered, measured and sometimes finished to match, not pulled off a van. Spring work here is worth doing properly the first time.
Old Greenwich and Riverside — water. Waterfront and near-waterfront streets have two problems layered on each other. Salt air corrodes cables and springs, the same as it does on Shippan or in Rowayton. And low-lying garages that have taken storm-surge water at any point carry the damage in the bottom section, the track feet and the rollers, where standing salt water does its work quietly for years. If your garage has ever had water in it, say so when you text — it changes what the technician looks at first.
Cos Cob, Byram, Glenville and Chickahominy — older, denser, smaller. These are the parts of Greenwich with ordinary housing stock: older single-family and two-family homes, detached one-car garages, some original one-piece tilt-up doors on extension springs, driveways that a van cannot always pull into. Parts for the old doors are less standard, and the repairs are frequently smaller in scope than people brace for.
Access is its own job here. Long driveways, gates with codes or call boxes, estate managers and property managers holding the keys. Half the delay on a Greenwich callout is not the drive, it is getting through the gate. Tell us at minute two if there is a gate, a code, a manager or a caretaker, and the technician sorts it before leaving rather than standing at the bottom of your driveway.
Getting to you
I-95 exits 2 through 5, the Merritt Parkway across the middle, Route 1 along the bottom. Working-hours callbacks inside the hour and same-day visits are the normal pattern for the coastal and central parts of town. The backcountry adds real drive time and gated access adds more, so an afternoon backcountry call is sometimes an early next-morning visit. We won't give you an arrival time — the technician driving does.
Urgent in Greenwich
A door stuck half open is an open house, and that is flagged urgent and handed over immediately at any hour, along with a trapped car, a snapped cable, a hanging panel or a commercial door that won't close on Greenwich Avenue. What we do and don't promise overnight.
What gets fixed
Broken springs · openers, sensors and remotes · off-track doors, cables, rollers and drums · panels, hinges, struts and weather seal · full door and opener replacement, including wood and custom doors, when repair is no longer the right answer. Opener work needing new electrical wiring goes to a licensed electrician and usually a Greenwich permit.

Greenwich questions people actually ask
Do you cover the backcountry, or only down by the water?
All of Greenwich: Byram, Chickahominy, central Greenwich, Cos Cob, Riverside, Old Greenwich, Glenville and the backcountry up to the Banksville and Armonk lines. The backcountry is a longer drive and gated access can add half an hour on its own, so a late-afternoon call up there is sometimes an early next-morning visit rather than a same-day one. We will tell you that when you text instead of letting you wait for a van that was never going to make it before dark.
My garage doors are wood and very heavy. Does that change the repair?
It changes the most important part of it. A solid or clad wood door can weigh roughly double a steel door of the same size, and the spring set has to be sized to that real weight — wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction all calculated from the door, not estimated. A spring that is merely close leaves the door out of balance, wears the opener, and fails early. It also means replacement sections for a custom or architectural door are ordered and sometimes finished to match, so a damaged panel is a lead-time conversation rather than a same-day one. Say "wood" or "custom" when you text.
Our garage took water in a storm years ago. Could that be why the door sticks?
Very likely part of it. Standing salt water in a low-lying Old Greenwich or Riverside garage corrodes the bottom section from the inside, rusts the track feet where they bolt to the slab, and seizes the lowest rollers — and all three show up later as a door that drags, sticks at the bottom, or runs crooked. It is worth telling the technician the history, because a door that is binding from corrosion at the floor gets misdiagnosed as a track or opener problem by someone who does not know the garage flooded.
There is a gate and a code. How do you handle access?
Tell us at the start. Gate codes, call boxes, caretakers, estate managers and property managers are the single biggest cause of a wasted Greenwich visit, and it is entirely avoidable. Give us the access detail when you text and it goes on the job with everything else, so the technician arranges entry before driving rather than calling you from the bottom of the driveway. If the person who can authorise the work is not the person at the house, that is also worth saying at minute two.
We have a detached garage in Cos Cob with an old door that tilts out. Fixable?
Usually, and they are still common in Cos Cob, Byram and Glenville. A one-piece tilt-up runs on extension springs and side hardware rather than torsion springs on a shaft, so the parts differ from a modern sectional and are less likely to be carried. Describe it as "one-piece, tilts out as it opens" when you text — that sentence gets the right parts loaded, and it also tells the technician whether you are looking at a repair or a conversion.
Can someone come out today in Greenwich?
In working hours, for the coastal and central parts of town, same-day is the normal pattern and a callback inside the hour is what we aim at. Backcountry and gated addresses are the exception, honestly. What we commit to is your text or call answered within two minutes at any hour, and a callback from the technician — the arrival time comes from the person driving, because a desk that invents one is a desk that will be wrong.
